Jacksonville Councilman Pushes for Rental Registry to Improve Tenant Transparency

In an effort to address recurring complaints regarding absentee and neglectful property management, Jacksonville City Councilman Jimmy Peluso is championing the creation of a local "Rental Registry." The proposed system is designed to act as a centralized resource for tenants, allowing them to verify property ownership and research a landlord's record regarding previous code violations. By providing this information upfront, the city hopes to empower renters to make more informed decisions before entering into housing agreements.

The initiative has gained significant momentum through a partnership with Jacksonville Area Legal Aid (JALA). As part of this effort, JALA is expected to take the lead in maintaining the list of rental properties and facilitating communication between tenants and the resources they need. Beyond the registry, Councilman Peluso is also advocating for the creation of an ombudsman position, which would serve as a dedicated contact point to help residents navigate city departments and resolve urgent maintenance issues like mold or broken air conditioning.
