Jacksonville Councilman Renews Push for Rental Registry to Increase Landlord Accountability

A renewed effort is underway in Jacksonville to establish a city-wide rental registry, a project spearheaded by City Councilman Jimmy Peluso. The proposed system is designed to act as a "one-stop shop" for residents, allowing them to verify property ownership and review a landlord’s history of code compliance before signing a lease. By creating a transparent, public-facing database, proponents hope to empower renters and curb the issues often caused by absentee or unresponsive property management.

The initiative recently gained significant momentum with the announcement that Jacksonville Area Legal Aid (JALA) will play a primary role in managing the registry. In addition to the registry, officials are exploring the creation of an ombudsman position to help tenants navigate city resources when facing habitability issues, such as broken utilities or mold. While the legislation is still being developed, the goal remains clear: to ensure that Jacksonville renters have the tools necessary to hold landlords accountable and ensure their housing meets safety and maintenance standards.
